Soccer Parents: How to Support Recruiting Without Taking Over

Key Takeaways

  • Your daughter is the player. Your role is to be her safe place, her logistics team and her sounding board.
  • Parents can help with the process (calendars, costs, questions), but coaches want to hear from the athlete.
  • Five good questions at home will do more than five hours of advice.

You drive. You pay. You show up in every kind of weather. Recruiting can feel like another full-time job, and everyone seems to have an opinion about what you should do.

Here is a calm, practical way to support your daughter without taking over.

Your role: what parents do best

1. Be her safe place. After a game, she needs to feel loved before she is coached. Try: “I love watching you play.” Save the analysis for later, and only if she asks.

2. Handle the logistics. Rides, schedules, deadlines, budgets and paperwork are where parents shine. Create a shared calendar for games, camps, school deadlines and recruiting tasks.

3. Help her think, not think for her. Ask open questions: “What kind of school do you see yourself in?” “What would make you happy there?”

4. Protect her energy. Burnout is real. Leave room for rest, friends and fun.

What to leave to your daughter

  • Writing to coaches. Coaches want to hear from the player. You can read and edit, but let her voice lead.
  • Talking about playing time. Encourage her to ask her own coach: “What can I work on?”
  • Making the final choice. It is her college life. Share your view, then trust her.

A year-by-year mindset (not a rigid calendar)

Every family’s path is different, but a simple way to think about it is:

  • Freshman year: protect grades, learn the levels, build habits.
  • Sophomore year: build a list of schools, record clips, create her profile.
  • Junior year: send emails, plan camps, watch deadlines.
  • Senior year: compare options, ask questions, decide.

If your daughter is older and you feel behind, take a breath. Start where you are. Doors are still open.

Money: have an honest conversation

College soccer can be expensive, and scholarships are not guaranteed. Athletic scholarships exist at some levels, are often partial and are usually combined with academic and need-based aid. Division III schools do not give athletic scholarships. Each school has a net price calculator on its website. Run it for your daughter’s top schools together.

Try to avoid saying “we’re spending so much” in front of her. Instead: “Let’s look at the real numbers together.”

Beware of promises

Anyone who guarantees a scholarship or a spot on a roster is selling something you cannot verify. Ask for specifics, ask for references and talk to families who have worked with them.

Five questions to ask her tonight

  1. “What do you love most about playing right now?”
  2. “What is one thing that feels heavy?”
  3. “What kind of college life do you picture?”
  4. “How can I help this week, and how can I help less?”
  5. “What do you want me to say, and not say, after games?”

Listen without fixing. These five questions often start the best conversations of the season.

The car ride home

If you remember one thing: the ride home matters. Your daughter might feel exposed after a tough game. Try silence, a favorite snack or a simple “Want to talk or want music?” Let her lead.

What we do at Athletes of Life

Athletes of Life is a virtual soccer club for girls. Our founder, Ana Egeling, came up through Vasco’s academy, played at Regis University and played pro at Botafogo. In our weekly mentorship, girls work on mindset and take one recruiting step at a time. Parents are welcome in selected sessions. We never promise scholarships. We show a path and help girls walk it. Minors join with parent authorization.

A final thought

Your daughter needs a parent more than she needs a recruiter. Keep showing up, keep asking, keep believing. The rest is a team effort.
